Tomato: Patriot Beefsteak Mix
An equal parts mix of our most patriotic beefsteak tomatoes! Blue Beauty, Great White, and Classic Beefsteak
Blue Beauty- Gorgeous, deep blue-black shoulders make this unique among slicing types. The plant produces lots of meaty pink beefsteak-shaped tomatoes with a lovely dark blue Anthocyanin top. If the fruits get enough sunlight they can turn completely dark blue/black! They are stable on the vine for longer than most and have good, sunburn, and crack resistance. Very good complex and deep flavor. The fruit is a modest beefsteak-type slicer, weighing up to 8 ounces. This recent Brad Gates introduction was selected from a cross between Beauty King and a blue tomato.
Great White- The Great White Tomato is an award-winning white beefsteak tomato! This unique variety has a creamy inside that grows to 12 ounces or more. The tomatoes are a beautiful white color inside and out and can be described as tasting like a cross between a melon, pineapple, and guava. Low-acid taste. Great White plants are known for being very robust and resistant to both early and late blight. The plants do need strong steaking but the branches are thick enough to support the individual tomatoes, unlike other beefsteak types. Introduced by Gleckler’s Seedsmen in 1987.
Classic Beefsteak- The Classic Beefsteak tomato of yesteryear is back! Massive fruit, easily reaching 1-2 lbs. has deep red flesh and good old-fashioned tomato flavor. These are the tomatoes that grandma grew, meaty and firm, perfect on sandwiches or served straight up with a pinch of salt. A particularly good producer in the Northeast, but well adapted to the entire U.S. as well. Scientists recently determined that Beefsteak’s massive fruit was originally caused by a chance mutation. This happy accident created a much larger tomato. Spanish conquistador, Hernan Cortez, brought samples of a larger, flattened tomato back to Europe. From this seed was developed many larger tomatoes we know today. To grow larger tomatoes only allow 2-3 fruits to grow per plant.
